Staying active and eating healthy is not only one of the biggest challenges of travel but also one of the most rewarding aspects. Here are some ways to maintain health and wellness while traveling abroad with practical tips, many inspired by mom, that have helped me find balance and stay healthy while on the road:
Pack Fitness Gear: One of the easiest ways to stay active while traveling is to be prepared. I always pack my running shoes, clothes I can sweat in, and a cap and goggles in case there's a pool or water body nearby for swimming laps. This ensures I’m ready for any fitness opportunity that comes my way.
Prioritize Sleep: Waking up well-rested makes it so much easier and more enjoyable to have an active day. Prioritizing sleep can be challenging with changing time zones and busy itineraries, but it’s essential for maintaining your energy levels and overall well-being.Â
Plan Ahead: Researching local spots for walking or running routes, hiking trails, or fitness studios before you arrive can make a big difference. For instance, during my trip to Budapest, I took yoga classes (taught entirely in Hungarian), and it was a highlight of my extended stay. Knowing where you can exercise helps integrate fitness seamlessly into your travel plans.
Balanced Meals: While trying local foods is one of the best parts of travel, it's still important to make room for fruits, vegetables, and clean protein sources. Striking a balance allows you to enjoy the local cuisine without going overboard.
Grocery Shop for Some Meals: On many of my trips, I grocery shopping for some of my meals. This makes eating healthy easier and provides a fun way to experience local culture through their grocery stores. Preparing a few meals yourself can help maintain a balanced diet and budget!
Pack Healthy Snacks: Having healthy snacks on hand is crucial, especially on busy travel days or early mornings. I typically bring protein bars and my favorite healthy cereal (if you know, you know) to ensure I have nutritious options available.
Stay Hydrated: Hydration is key to staying healthy and active. I often pack an insulated water bottle, which makes drinking enough water throughout the day automatic. Staying hydrated helps with energy levels, digestion, and overall health.
Traveling doesn't have to mean sacrificing your health and wellness. By incorporating these tips into your travel routine, you can find a balance that allows you to stay active, eat well, and still fully enjoy your adventures. Happy travels!
